Before liberation, it had been for a long time that the people of all nationalities struggled on the poverty line owing to its lagged mode of production and lower productivity, even with the fertile lands and a sparse population in Dehong Prefecture. After the founding of the P.R.C., all the nationalities stood up and became the master of their fate, especially after accomplishing “Peaceful Consultations” and “Land Reforms” in 1955, all the nationalities possessed an unprecedented high enthusiasm of production, building up their life in high spirits and longing for a beautiful future. However, owing to the wrongful influence of the policy of “The Great Leap Forward”, the movement of “The Great Cultural Revolution” and other left-leaning errors, just as the same situations in the whole nation, the economic construction in Dehong Prefectural frontier area met with a severe frustration and the national economy nearly went to a collapse fringe; from the middle of the 1960s to the 1970s, people led a life of deficient material; it was a planned economy era when food, clothes and other basic living things need the coupon-based supplying. People led a life with monotony wearing, rare non-staple food; bicycles, wristwatches, sewing machines and radios were called “Three Cycling and One sound”, which became the superior vogue goods of people’s pursuing. In 1978, after the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the CPC, the job focus for the Party and the nation shifted to the economic construction; the Responsibility System Linked with Output was executed in the countryside and the Policy of Reform and Opening to the Outside World was carried into execution by the nation; people’s living standards were improving year by year; people dressed warmly and could eat their fill; furthermore, people became wealthy gradually and the “ten thousand-yuan-household” began to show up in the society; the color TV sets, refrigerators ,washing machines and motorcycles replaced the “ Three Cycling and One Sound ” and became the new vogue of big merchandise.
