Jingpos Funeral

Pubdate:2009-06-01

Funeral is also one of the most important rites of Jingpo people. When an aged people pass away, his or her family members fire shots skyward to report the grievous news. Hearing the shots, the relatives and village neighbors come to offer a help. Led by Dongsa, all of them dance the funeral dance, hoping to send off the ghost as quickly as possible. The funeral dance generally goes for three nights and the climax of the funeral comes on the very day the coffin is carried to the cemetery. All the villages take part in the carnival dance called "Bugunge". After lunch, Dongsa reads the imprecation in front of the coffin and declares the coffin transfer and burial. On the very night, a table of sacrifices will be placed at the burial site and Dongsa reads abracadabra asking the deceased to rest in peace and never go home. The relatives accompany the bereaved and do not go back home until the dawn comes. With all this done, the funeral is called a complete one.(Source: the Publicity Department of Longchuan County Committee)
