                                                   Kuoshi Festival of Lisu Ethnic Group

 

      Kuoshi (literally means the New Year in Lisu language) Festival, the grandest one of the Lisu ethnic group, comprises lots of celebration activities. On New Year’s Eve, senior Lisu people will offer liquor, meat and rice cake as sacrifices to worship the Heaven, the Earth and their ancestors. The Lisu people keep singing and dancing on New Year’s Day and stage target practice and hunting next day. Other activities held during the holiday include playing on a swing, climbing ladder of knives and crossing the sea of flames. Kuoshi Festival celebration reaches its climax as the game of climbing ladder of knives is staged. Lisu people put up an over 20 meters high ladder and bind 36 sharp-edged knives on it.
