   After the inspection of forestry experts, communities of of sterculia colorata, a national second-class protected plant, are discovered in Dehong.

    Belonging to erythropsis in sterculiaceae species, sterculia colorata is an endangered species and listed as a national second-class protected plant. Sterculia colorata is similar in bark with lannea grandis, in leaf with trident maple, in pistil with  pyrostegia venusta. When it blossoms, the leaves fall off and red flowers hang on all the branches. As a fine item for high quality timber, gardening and border tree, the tree is of great economic and ornamental value. The plant mainly spread over tropical rain forest at an altitude of 400-900 meters in Xishuangbanna.

    At present, sterculia coloratas are in full blossom. Three communities of the plant are discovered and confirmed in Jinghan in Longchuan County and Mangshi.  The plant mainly spread over subtropical rain forest valleys at an altitude of 1000-1350 meters. Among those trees discovered, twenty of them measures more than 15 centimeters in trunk diameter, with the largest trunk diameter being more than 56 centimeters. The average height of the trees is 20-30 meters. The discovery and confirmation of the species in Dehong are of great significance to the protection, breeding and utilization of the species.
