Mangshi celebrates the New Year’s Day of 2112 in Dai calendar

  On December 9, Mangshi Square was soaked in laughter, singing and dancing. Dressed in ethnic costumes, Dai people in Mangshi gather at Mangshi Square to celebrate the new year of 2112 in Dai calendar.

  The celebration kicks off with a dance celebrating the new year, which is followed by various performances featuring Dai ethnic. The performances win thunderous cheer and applause from the audience. When the countdown ends, people set off fireworks and cheer for the new year.

  It is learned that Dai people’s calendar is initiated by their ancestors in the long process of history. Dating back to 94 BC, the festival enjoys a 2112-year history. As a distinctive marker of Dai culture, Dai calendar is one of the important symbols of the civilization of Dai people. Dai people host grand activities to celebrate the festival each year, passing down Dai culture and promoting exchange with other ethnic groups.
