Located in southwest border of China, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture sits in west of Yunnan Province. Mangshi, the center of the prefecture, is 649 kilometers from Kunming, with air distance being 427 kilometers. Under its administration, there are two cities and three counties, namely Mangshi City, Ruili City, Longchuan County, Yingjiang County and Lianghe County. Dehong is transliterated from the dialect of Dai ethnic group, which means the place at the lower reach of Nujiang River. Dehong is one of the eight autonomous prefectures inhabited by minority ethnic groups in Yunnan Province. Five indigenous ethnic minority groups live here, namely Dai, Jingpo, Lisu, Achang and Deang.
